An eye examination is an important part of looking after your eyes, but it’s more than a simple test of your sight. Your optometrist is able to check out other general health issues during an eye examination and give advice. An eye examination should be part of everyone’s normal health routine. 

We now know that many eye diseases occur or begin at the outer edges of the retina, (“the periphery”), so examining this area is extremely important. Because seeing the entire retina is so important at Toddington Eyecare we have invested in the most advanced camera for ultra-widefield photography and angiography. In a single, quick shot, this camera produces optomap photos or angiograms of about 82% of the retina. These optomap images provide superior visibility of the retinal periphery allowing us to see, document, show you, and follow pathology that could not be seen with traditional eye cameras. The optomap exam is quick and painless and combined with the thorough eye exams our Optometrists are trained to provide this advanced technology offers a new level of diagnostic confidence. Did you know that about 80% of blindness and irreversible vision loss is caused by back-of-the-eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and Age-related macular Degeneration? The good news is that regular eye exams and early detection of these diseases can prevent irreversible vision loss. Most people who need to wear glasses can wear contact lenses. There are two main types of contact lenses:

• soft lenses which mould to the shape of your eye
• rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP lenses) which are fitted closely to the shape of your eye and are less flexible.

In the UK, the prevalence of myopia in children aged  between 10-16 years has more than doubled over the last  50 years, and children are becoming myopic at a younger  age, putting them at a high risk of developing sight threatening ocular pathology as a result. We offer multiple solutions for parents considering myopia management for their child.   

Surgical aftercare consultations would usually require you to come back for check ups. This is to ensure that your treatment achieves the best possible results. 

Your personal consultation to establish if you are suitable for treatment. You will receive a thorough eye examination to ensure the health of your eyes and a second eye test to verify your prescription. We will discuss your general health, lifestyle and personal expectations for good vision. You will be advised of the risks, alternatives and have the opportunity to ask any questions.  

When you have your prescription made up, you will be given help in choosing glasses or contact lenses. If you choose contact lenses you will be given advice on the various types of lenses available, how to fit them, and how to look after and clean them.
